Christine Jorgensen: The Blonde Bombshell
by Wesley Barrett, Chair of Regnbue Ætt
In honor of Veterans Day and Trans Awareness Week, I honor Christine Jorgensen, a WWII Veteran and early Transwoman celebrity.
Christine Jorgensen was an early Transwoman celebrity, WWII Veteran, and pioneer in gender and sexual liberation. Born George William Jorgenson on May 30th, 1926, Christine at all times of her life felt like she was in the wrong body. Her sister even stated that she tended to wear dresses and play with dolls as a child. Christine tried to enlist in the US Army in 1941 but was denied entry due to her “dainty size.” In a few months, she was drafted. At Fort Dix in New Jersey, Jorgensen served 5 years throughout the war as a clerical worker until her honorable discharge.
In 1952, Ms. Jorgensen underwent an early “gender reassignment” surgery to give her a more feminized appearance. Even back then, she faced a lot of discrimination, but she also became a movie star in her biographical movie.
