April 21 is Nonbinary Parents Day A 2020 study by the UCLA School of Law Williams Institute found that 19% of transgender adults in the United States are parents. One third of transgender parents identify as non binary. Nonbinary identities have been recognized by the State of Washington since 2018 when the WA Department of Health created a new “X” designation for gender identification on birth certificates. In recent years, groups have finally recognized that Mother’s Day or Father’s Day leave a lot of folks out. Today is a day we celebrate all of the Nonbinary Parents out there. And while Trans Families has a mission of supporting parents of transgender, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming children, you know that transgender parents can have transgender kids, right? As a nonbinary parent, Nonbinary Parents Day, which is celebrated on the third Sunday in April, is both a celebration and a relief. I’m years into parenting and am still carving out room for myself in such a gendered space.Nonbinary educator and performer Johnny Blazes created and began celebrating Nonbinary Parents Day in 2017, and the holiday seems to find more celebrants each year. When you’re nonbinary, you’re often forced into choosing a binary gender: between the men’s or women’s department, between Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. Being a nonbinary parent involves so many parentheticals, but Nonbinary Parents Day is a day that’s just for us.
