GEBO by Hrefna Nornsdatter, Acting Chancellor of Religious Studies
Good morning! Today’s rune is Gebo. What is a gift to you? Is it a wrapped present? Is it time and energy? Is it the thought that counts?
“The greatest gift that you can give to others is the gift of unconditional love and acceptance.” – Brian Tracy
GEBO
Pronunciation: gay-boo
Meaning: A gift
The exchange of gifts was a highly meaningful act and the need for exchanged energies and powers to remain equal is one of the most important aspects of the rune Gebo. In the Havamal it says, “A man should be loyal through life to friends, and return gift for gift; Laugh when they laugh, but with lies repay a false foe who lies.” This rune represents exchange, generosity, and “sacred marriage.” It can also be connected to sacrifice; with “give” there is always “take.”
Keywords: gift, trade, partnership, favors, contracts, obligations, debt, oath-taking.
