The United States Marine Corps is one of the most respected military organizations in the world. They are known for their bravery, their sense of duty, and their loyalty to the Corps. The Marine Corps was founded on November 10, 1775, at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia. Since then, they have been an integral part of the United States military.

The Marine Corps’ birthday is celebrated every year on November 10. It is a time to remember the brave men and women who have served in the Corps and to celebrate the values that the Corps represents. If you are a Marine, or if you know a Marine, then you know that this is a special day.  We’ll explore some of the traditions that are associated with the Marine Corps birthday.

The history of the Marine Corps’ birthday is a long and proud one. The Marine Corps was founded in 1775, making it one of the oldest military organizations in the United States. In honor of its history, the Marine Corps celebrates its birthday with a cake-cutting ceremony each year. The cake is traditionally a giant chocolate cake, and the first slice is always eaten by the oldest Marine present. The Commandant and Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps deliver a birthday message each year, which started in 1921.  In 1925 is when the first Marine Corps ball was held in Philadelphia and was masterminded by Maj McClellan. We don’t have much information on celebrations until 1937 when more units started developing their own celebrations.  

There are a few things that happen at every single Marine Corps Ball across the world. The oldest and youngest Marine in attendance eats the first piece of cake. Major General Lejeune’s message is read and of course that year’s birthday message. This is all followed by dinner, drinks, and dancing.

The Marine Corps birthday is a time-honored tradition. Marines all over the world celebrate the birthday of their beloved Corps. And while each Marine celebrates in their own way, there are some birthday traditions that are common among all Marines. For example, many Marines will wear their dress blues on the Marine Corps birthday, to attend the ball. Others will participate in a birthday cake-cutting ceremony. And of course, all Marines will raise a glass to toast the Marine Corps on its birthday.

The Marine Corps has a long and storied history, and its birthday is a time to reflect on all they have accomplished. Here are some interesting facts about the Marine Corps’ birthday and the Marines themselves.

-The first Marine Corps birthday was celebrated in 1925.

-In 2014, then-Commandant General James Amos announced that the Marine Corps birthday would henceforth be celebrated as a day of service. Marines all over the world participate in various service projects on this day.

-One of the most popular traditions on Marine Corps birthday is the Marine Corps Birthday Ball. This formal event is held in honor of the Marines and their service to our country.
