Writing History
by Flakkandi Heim, Awaken the North Scribe
Since I took the reins as Scribe back in August, I have been trying to figure out what I could write about from the Scribe’s perspective. As I see it, the Scribe is not a “front-facing position.” It’s more someone who sits back recording the goings on rather than directly influencing them. This has its pros and cons. On the one hand, you can feel a bit removed from the action. Almost like Stryder sitting in the shadows at the Prancing Pony. It wasn’t until the action picked up that you saw him engage. To be clear, I am not saying that I am anywhere as awesome as Aragorn. It was just an easy reference. On the other hand, some people expect you to have all of the answers (or at least the record of the answers). Luckily, this hasn’t been too much the case so far. Folks know that my data only goes back only so far.
Since nearly day one, I have been working to catalog all the pertinent data that comes and goes behind the scenes here at Awaken the North. Whether it’s something as impactful as a Chancellor stepping down, or something as minor as documenting Hávamál requests from military members around the world… nothing goes undocumented. You never know what data might prove relevant to something in the future. We are literally writing the history of this organization on a daily basis. I am fortunate enough to be the metaphorical pen on the paper. I have the rather unique (and often unfortunate) ability to be able to separate personal feelings from professional ones. It has often led me down some fun rabbit holes, as it has sparked some interesting debates and discussions. It has also led me down painful paths, as people take my stances in unintended ways. Regardless, I document, I catalog.
Much of what goes on in an organization such as this, the majority of people don’t care about. I’d even wager they don’t want to know about some things (no one gives a hoot about how many pocket altars were requested by the Chaplain at Ft. Such-and-Such). If there are things that people want to know about, they are welcome to ask. OR, even better, if there is something they feel is relevant to the future of the organization, they are welcome to reach out to me. It could be asking about a vote on bylaws or telling me that some random person reposted something of interest on AtN’s Facebook. Whatever the case may be, I will ensure that it gets addressed by the appropriate party. Now, a word of caution: I am not a the High Drighton. I am not the person that you come to file a complaint with about those things. I am happy to pass it along, just know that I am not the one who will handle it personally (though I’m more than happy to assist if requested). What this boils down to is simple: I am the voice that helps write our history.
