ISA

By Eelje Oldfield, Acting Chancellor of Religious Studies

Good morning! Today’s rune is Isa. How appropriate as we start moving into the colder, icy months! (Sorry, no fancy altar picture today, for some reason I am missing Isa!)

“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: If we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.” — Anne Bradstreet

ISA

Meaning: “Ice”

Pronunciation: “Iss-ah”

While ice may be beautiful and still, the stagnation of Isa isn’t the most hospitable ground for growth and movement. Under the control of the cold and stillness, we become stuck and immovable. We cannot move past our emotional and mental obstacles, and we cannot experience the joy and wonder of change. When we allow ourselves to become covered in the ice and turn it into our base of understanding of the world, we leave ourselves on treacherous ground. Nothing is more dangerous than a crack forming underneath the ice we walk upon. All too quickly we find ourselves drowning under the weight of everything we packed away as we refused to move forward.

Keywords: Stasis, stillness, frozen, cold, stagnation, lack of change/emotion, immobility, blindness
