Weekly Honoring of Tyr: Fatalism

When we look at the lore, we can see that the ancestors had a bit of a fatalistic philosophy of life. What does that mean? It means they held a belief that one could not escape their fate. We touched on that last week with the discussion of drengr.

Because there was a commonly held belief that one could not change their fate there is a good chance that living in the present was more likely to a thing. Maybe the goal – whether stated in that way or not – was just to live a good life and be happy. Of course, goal setting is rather modern compared to the ways our ancestors lived in the Viking era. Also, it is very likely that what made a good life would be different from how we define it now. But a consistent concept of how to be happy is to seek wisdom. Wisdom brings a certain amount of independence to the individual. Independence is another value that we can find reoccurring in the lore.
