Weekly Honoring of Tyr: Friends and Frenemies

Stay loyal to your friends.

Be friendly to their friends.

But do not make friends with their enemies.

-Havamal in Everyday English, Goði Beast, Stanza 43

There is nothing worse than a wolf befriending a sheep. Avoid False friendships at all costs. If you are good, straightforward, and well meaning it should show in your eyes and not escape notice.

-Marcus Aurelius, meditations, 11.15

Of course, it is important to recognize those who are not our friends. Even more so to know when they are false friends, frenemies, so that we are not “eaten” by the big bad wolf. I feel it is more important that we have the self-awareness to recognize and correct when we are being that person. There may be times when dishonesty – treachery – is most appropriate, these times will be far fewer than we might expect. Being honest, speaking plainly and succinctly, but with respect and kindness, should be the way far more often than the treachery. If you find yourself with a need to be treacherous more often than you can he honest, you may need to evaluate your situation and make appropriate changes.
