Weekly Honoring of Tyr: We Can’t Tell You How to Heathen

Hello there fellow Heathens! Another Tyrsday has found us yet again. So, what rambling scrambled brain offering does the High Drighten have to say about Tyr this week? I don’t know but let’s find out together, shall we?

“We can’t tell you how to Heathen” – a sentiment that I first heard on the amazing podcast Frithcast (go give Suzanne and Kate a listen if you haven’t yet – or even if you have then you know they are good to listen to repeatedly). Now I do not know if they were the coiners of the phrase, I am only giving them the credit because that is where it originated for me. What does this have to do with Tyr? I don’t know yet – but if you have read any of these posts I make you know that I always figure out some way to bring my topic back around to Tyr – often loosely and unconvincingly.

Let’s discuss how traditions/beliefs evolve over time – this is usually due to the changes in the culture and society in general. At one point the historians believe that Tyr was the chief god of the Germanic peoples (see how I got that tied into Tyr?). Over time, the reasons have been lost to us (for now), Odin surpassed Tyr as the chief deity. We can discuss why/how this may have happened in the comment section below. There is some correlation that can be made when considering the story of Tyr losing his hand to Fenrir. How he sacrificed his sword hand, which diminished his power considerably, could be interpreted as his fall from power.

Do you believe that we can/do receive new revelations? Do you think that the lore is a living and expanding experience? Do you believe that the lore is what it is, and we are responsible for figuring out how to apply it to modern living? Let’s get some chatter going on this – feel free to add you own thoughts. Let me know if I’m way off base or did I pin the tail squarely on the donkey’s ass?

Hail Tyr
