Daily Rune – Bjarkan

Good Máni’s day. Todays rune is Bjarkan. We’re always happy when this rune shows up. It tells me Frigg, the All-Mother, is about to do her thing. I feel purification here. It might be time for another blót in her name. I’m also taking note inthe last line of the rune poem to ponder today. “Loki bar flærða tíma” or “Loki was fortunate in his deceit.” I’m reminded of Loki’s interaction with Frigg in the Lokesenna, was Loki fortunate because Frigg did not reveal him his fate? It is odd to me that he’s mention in the rune poem for the rune that is often attributed to Frigg.

ᛒ björk/bjarkan/bjarken (“birch”) means “birch tree”. The rune of the Goddess and birth.

Sound: “b”, “p”, “v”, “mb”, “mp”

Meaning: The birch twig represents rebirth and purification as does the rune Bjarkan. It is also a woman’s rune symbolizing gestation and birth.

Norwegian rune poem **

ᛒ Bjarkan er laufgrønstr líma;

Loki bar flærða tíma.

Translation **

ᛒ Birch has the greenest leaves of any shrub;

Loki was fortunate in his deceit.
