Daily Rune – Ear

Good Frigg’s day my friends! Todays rune is Ear from the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc. I see this as an end to past versions of myself. The death of old habits, anxieties and personality traits. With that death, a new, stronger, more compassionate, and less stressed version of me emerges as the cycle renews.

ēar grave and earth. The rune of the past and end. Ear symbolizes the grave that we will all return to. However, the only way that we can die is because there was life, to begin with. “Without life, there is no death and without time there is no life.” More generally Ear signifies the unavoidable end of all things.

Anglo-Saxon rune poem **

ᛠ Ear byþ egle eorla gehwylcun,

  ðonn[e] fæstlice flæsc onginneþ,

  hraw colian, hrusan ceosan

  blac to gebeddan; bleda gedreosaþ,

  wynna gewitaþ, wera geswicaþ.

Translation **

Ear

The grave is horrible to every knight,

when the corpse quickly begins to cool

and is laid in the bosom of the dark earth.

Prosperity declines, and happiness passes away.

and covenants are broken.
