Daily Rune – Kaun

Good Sunna’s day! Todays rune is Kaun of the Younger Futhark once again. With all these death and rebirth runes that have been showing lately I’ve been doing a lot of pondering on life and death in general. That’s one of the facets of this rune, gaining new insight on the wisdom we’ve gained from our own suffering, or of those we’ve cared for. It is not only our own that affects us. We do well to remember that. This is why we must show compassion to everyone. Even when it can be a struggle to do so.

 Kaun (“ulcer”). Wisdom through suffering.

Sound: “k”, “g”

Meaning: Although this rune stands for a wound, we must understand that it is through the suffering of such a wound that we gain new insight. This rune represents just that, the new insight that we gain from an illness or wound.

Norwegian rune poem **

ᚴ Kaun er barna bǫlvan;

bǫl gørver nán fǫlvan.

Translation **

ᚴ Kaun

An ulcer is fatal to children;

death makes a corpse pale.
