Daily Rune – Kaun

Happy Frigg’s day! Todays rune is Kaun of the younger futhark. Unlike its counterpart in the elder which is more akin to the fires of inspiration, Kaun is more like wisdom gained through suffering. Oddly enough,it perfectly explains the illness I’ve been suffering through the last few months. Just as in the Hávamál where Odin speaks of giving himself unto himself and hanging from Yggdrasil for 9 nights to discover the runes. It was a sacrifice, and through that sacrifice was knowledge gained. Through suffering and sacrifice we can learn some of our greatest lessons. The trick is to learn from them instead of letting it eat away at us and control us.

 Kaun (“ulcer”). Wisdom through suffering.

Sound: “k”, “g”

Meaning: Although this rune stands for a wound, we must understand that it is through the suffering of such a wound that we gain new insight. This rune represents just that, the new insight that we gain from an illness or wound.

Norwegian rune poem **

ᚴ Kaun er barna bǫlvan;

bǫl gørver nán fǫlvan.

Translation **

ᚴ Kaun

An ulcer is fatal to children;

death makes a corpse pale.
