Today’s pull is Gebo!
Pronunciation: GHEB-o
Literal Translation: Gift

Gebo reminds us that first of all, we are independent and free beings and that in any relationship (professional, sentimental, or friendship), we are happy only if we know how to maintain our independence. It also warns you, however, that you must not settle down or cancel yourself in this union. In fact, the only true association is that it is made up of complete and independent people who preserve their individuality even if they unite with each other. There is no “standard” reverse interpretation, but as you progress in your path you may find that it shows you a reversal of imagery or negative language

Gebo is the rune of the gifts, of balance, and of compromise. Gebo is also the seventh rune in the Futhark which brings to mind the powerful numerology of the lucky number seven. This is the rune of gifts not necessarily material but definitely ancestral and spiritual. The Norse were and are extremely practical people who believe in hospitality and equal exchange to be of the highest priority. As we saw with Fehu when one brings forward wealth it is important to distribute it equally and balance so all can flourish. Gebo rules over esoteric exchange and this is seen in the offerings of then and now, if you ask the gods for help and they make it so the universe provides whether directly or indirectly, it’s only fair we say thank you and give a gift in return.

Gebo doesn’t necessarily mean that the gift comes with strings attached.
Or the strings may be of the expected variety, such as a birthday present, a holiday present, or some other giving time, like a wedding shower or baby shower. Sometimes the gift does have strings attached, but it’s up to you to determine if it’s an opportunity you wish to take advantage of. Gebo can also mean a gift from the gods, but it also suggests a partnership between you and the god or goddess who is offering the gift.

The meaning of Gebo can depend on the runes surrounding it. The runes feed off of each other, creating a broader picture for the caster. Gebo definitely means gift and/or partnership, but the other runes around it may dictate how that gift or partnership fits in context with everything else.
Key Concepts: gifts, giving, taking, trade, sacrifice, the process of exchange, balance, compensation, equilibrium, the law of reciprocation, altruism, the gravity of equals and opposites, generosity, hospitality, honor
