Daily Rune – Mann

Good Thor’s day! Today I actually pulled from a set of Anglo-Saxon Futhorc runes and our rune today is Mann. Just like Mannaz in the elder futhark, Mann here represents mankind, and humanity. We get awareness in abundance with this one. Not in the sense of being harmed, more along the lines of just being aware of people’s emotions, feeling, and beliefs. Sometimes we need to take better care of our words and actions so that we may harm none. A kind word or deed can travel a much further path than you could ever fathom.

á›— Mann means ”man’’. The rune of planning, intelligence, and awareness. The Germanic code of ethics was not very different from the classical virtues (prudence, justice, temperance, courage) which Christianity took alongside faith, hope, and charity to form the seven cardinal virtues.

Anglo-Saxon rune poem **

á›— Man byþ on myrgþe his magan leof:

   sceal þeah anra gehwylc oðrum swican,

   forðum drihten wyle dome sine

   þæt earme flæsc eorþan betæcan.

Translation **

Mann

The joyous man is dear to his kinsmen;

yet every man is doomed to fail his fellow,

since the Lord by his decree will commit the vile carrion to the earth.
